Hello Region 8!
There are several points which I want make to keep you as a Region informed.
First! The proposal deadline for the 2014 Region 8 Conference has passed and we had a ton of proposals! Our proposal committee will begin reviewing these proposals and we will contact those who submitted very soon!
Second! Registration is open for the 2014 Region 8 Conference. Registration before February 28th is only $135 for current members. Remember the conference will be held March 20th-22nd at the Marriott Pinnacle Downtown in Vancouver B.C.
Third! Do you need some more exciting news about the conference (as if your not already convinced)? Well I have some! Teri Duever, Oregon State University will once again wow everyone by presenting her 2013 Best of Region 8 presentation, “Does Happiness Matter? Applying Positive Psychology to Advising.” This presentation will be done as a Pre-Conference workshop. Stay tuned for future information on Pre-Conference registration.
Fourth! Announcing the Vancouver 2014 Service Project!
Your Putting the Pieces Together: Supporting the Whole Student conference committee has selected the Downtown Eastside (DTES) Women’s Centre as our 2014 service project.
The DEWC exists to support and empower women and children living in extreme poverty in the DTES of Vancouver. It provides practical support to over 300 people daily. This support includes security, basic needs, and support to encourage women to make long-term change by identifying and removing barriers to full participation in the larger community.
There is a drop-in centre and night shelter, which include assistance such as nutritional meals, showers, personal care items, clothing, culturally specific programs, and counseling referrals, plus support, information, advocacy and education with victim assistance, mental health, HIV outreach, drug and alcohol support, literacy, basic and life skills education.
At our conference, we will be collecting physical as well as financial donations towards the work of the DEWC. We invite you to consider packing along in your bag one or more of the following donation items:
- Travel-Sized Shampoo & Conditioner, New Soap, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Hand Cream, Make-Up
- Reading Glasses
- Alcohol Wipes
- Hand Sanitizer Pump Dispensers
- Socks, Underwear, and Bras (new or gently used)
- Feminine Hygiene Products
- Arts & Crafts Supplies
- Office Supplies
- Used DVDs
Have more room?
- Coats, Women’s Clothing, Rain Gear, Footwear
- Blankets and Linens
- Incontinence Supplies (Tena, Poise, etc.)
Both American and Canadian currency will be accepted via a donation box at our Hospitality Table if you wish to donate cash.
