Region 8-ers, you recently received an email from Region Chair Brett MacFarlane. The region leadership is currently seeking nominations for the region steering committee. As the email stated, “This is a tremendous opportunity to represent your state/province, become more involved in NACADA, and help steer the region into new and exciting programs.”
Serving on the committee is a two-year commitment. This particular two-year term will begin April 2010. Nominees must have been a NACADA member for at least a year to be eligible.
Steering committee members have the following responsibilities:
(1) Evaluate and amend the strategic plan every two years,
(2) Select a site for the annual regional conference,
(3) Oversee and approve the Region budget,
(4) Identify emerging leaders in the region,
(5) Administer region level scholarship and award programs,
(6) Publicize NACADA professional development opportunities, and
(7) Promote membership to all academic advisors in the region.
In addition to meetings held at the Regional conference each year, the committee holds 4-5 conference calls each year to handle region business.
Nominations are now being taken for the following states/provinces (2010-2012 membership term):
- British Columbia
- Yukon/Canada at large
The region strives to provide each state/province with two serving liaisons on the committee. The liaisons have a staggered appointment so no state has two new liaisons during each election cycle. Each state liaison can serve no more than two consecutive terms. We have yet to have a steering committee member from the Yukon Territory and would definitely welcome nominations from that province.
Nominations are also being accepted for the region Budget Coordinator. This individual can be from any Region 8 state/province. This position works closely with the region and conference chairs.
If you are interested in nominating yourself or a colleague, please submit a short bio (including your current position, involvement in NACADA, and motivation for participating on the Steering Committee) to: Brett.McFarlane@oregonstate.edu PRIOR to March 1, 2010. Elections will be held in early March and newly elected steering committee members will be recognized at the conference in Calgary in Spring 2011.
